Nighttime face recognition at large standoff: Cross-distance and cross-spectral matching
نویسندگان
چکیده
Face recognition in surveillance systems is important for security applications, especially in nighttime scenarios when the subject is far away from the camera. However, due to the face image quality degradation caused by large camera standoff and low illuminance, nighttime face recognition at large standoff is challenging. In this paper, we report a system that is capable of collecting face images at large standoff in both daytime and nighttime, and present an augmented heterogeneous face recognition (AHFR) approach for cross-distance (e.g., 150m probe vs. 1m gallery) and cross-spectral (near-infrared probe vs. visible light gallery) face matching. We recover high-quality face images from degraded probe images by proposing an image restoration method based on Locally Linear Embedding (LLE). The restored face images are matched to the gallery by using a heterogeneous face matcher. Experimental results show that the proposed AHFR approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for cross-spectral and cross-distance face matching.

Nighttime Face Recognition at Long Distance: Cross-Distance and Cross-Spectral Matching
Automatic face recognition capability in surveillance systems is important for security applications. However, few studies have addressed the problem of outdoor face recognition at a long distance (over 100 meters) in both daytime and nighttime environments. In this paper, we first report on a system that we have designed to collect face image database at a long distance, called the Long Distan...
متن کاملA Study on Using Mid-Wave Infrared Images for Face Recognition
The problem of face identification in the Mid-Wave InfraRed (MWIR) spectrum is studied in order to understand the performance of intra-spectral (MWIR to MWIR) and cross-spectral (visible to MWIR) matching. The contributions of this work are two-fold. First, a database of 50 subjects is assembled and used to illustrate the challenges associated with the problem. Second, a set of experiments is p...
متن کاملCan we match Ultraviolet Face Images against their Visible Counterparts?
In law enforcement and security applications, the acquisition of face images is critical in producing key trace evidence for the successful identification of potential threats. However, face recognition (FR) for face images captured using different camera sensors, and under variable illumination conditions, and expressions is very challenging. In this paper, we investigate the advantages and li...

Face recognition systems typically have a rather short operating distance with standoff (distance between the camera and the subject) limited to 1∼2 meters. When these systems are used to capture face images at a larger distance (5∼10 m), the resulting images contain only a small number of pixels on the face region, resulting in a degradation in face recognition performance. To address this pro...

Recent advances in facial recognition have trended towards cross-spectrally matching visible gallery face images to probe face images captured under different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. In this article, we study the problem of matching visible images to images taken in the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrum, more specifically, the 1550-nm band. There are many benefits t...
